Joseph Beuys: Actions, Vitrines and Environments

“It was simply impossible for human beings to bring their creative intention into the world in any other way than through action”. With this phrase, German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) explained his idea of art; a tool that has the power to give shape to a better society.

This extensive retrospective, the first to be held in the UK, that the Tate dedicates to his work will describe his radical vision through three distinct sections; Actions, performances with a strong message of social and political involvement; Vitrines, used by Beuys to present the objects that he felt to be most interesting; and Environments, immense installations that were carried out mainly towards the end of his career.
