Diesel Wall: a blank wall for aspiring artists A blank wall is a bit like a blank page – an invitation to unleash your creativity. A need felt by many but that most of the time is impossible to meet in the contemporary city. In an attempt of fill this gap an unusual competition was launched last year by Diesel. In 2004, the Veneto based clothing brand set up a unique initiative, to make 360 square metres of wall space available to artists, students and creatives in the centre of Milan, near the columns of San Lorenzo. Over 700 projects were submitted from which three winners were selected and an estimated fifteen thousand people have passed by the wall every day.

A year later the competition is being run again, the same wall will be used to show work by three artists. To take part? A sketch of the work (scale 1:50) should be prepared for the work to be shown on the wall. An international jury that includes the director of the Palais de Tokyo Jérôme Sans, editor of Domus Stefano Boeri, artist Patrick Tuttofuoco and editor of Flash Art Helena Kontova will have the task of choosing the three most original designs that from April to January will transform the blank wall of the building in via Pioppette 3 into a work of contemporary art. Winning projects will each be shown for three months. E.S.
