Rome: restoration of Guttuso’s graffiti

Tonight sees the unveiling, after a long period of restoration, of the facade of the Valle Giulia faculty of architecture in Rome. Taking place at 19.30 in via Gramsci 53, it will be a chance to see restored to its original splendour, the graffiti made in 1968 by student protesters designed by painter Renato Guttuso. The work, which covers nearly all of the wall, is made up of wavy lines which turn into stylised leafs and plants, whilst a giant shadow of a man is caught in the act of climbing up the wall – challenging indifference and misunderstanding towards the heights of knowledge and culture.

Taking part in the opening ceremony for the restoration which as well as the façade has involved almost all the building – designed in 1932 by Enrico Del Debbio, it was the historic seat of the school of architecture in Rome – and is part of a wider programme of decentralisation of the ‘La Sapienza’ University, will be mayor Walter Veltroni, director Giuseppe D’Ascenzo and head of the faculty Roberto Palumbo. It provides also the opportunity for a public look at the new Piano Regolatore Generale for Rome and the programme of building intervention for the university. Topics which will be then be further examined in a conference involving Roberto Morassut, planning assessor for the Comune and Angelo Balducci, head of public works.
