Fondazione Prada in Tokyo with Mariko Mori

The first anthology of Japanese artist Mariko Mori has been organised by the Fondazione Prada together with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, which will be hosting the exhibition from 19 January to 24 March. The exhibition has been put together by Germano Celant and Junichi Shioda from the Tokyo museum and presents a series of pieces beginning with early photographic work from 1994 and leading on through to more recent work. The fantastic world of the artist takes on a three dimensional effect in video projections which use optical fibre to activate mechanisms hidden in the installations, leaving the viewer with a critical vision of Japanese society.

Early works include large photographic images which illustrate metropolitan situations, followed by the visionary pieces made between 1996 and 1998, such as “Mirror of Water” and the three dimensional projection “Nirvana”. Two monumental installations from 1999 make up the central nucleus of the exhibition: “Garden of Purification” – a closed environment of almost sacred impact which attempts to make the visitor let go of the conventional distance between the interior and exterior world – and “Dream Temple”, a multimedia architecture which attempts to fuse scientific knowledge and mysticism to achieve higher spiritual awareness.
