The material palette is the key to understanding this residential building in Lisbon

In the Lapa district, ALA.rquitectos transforms an existing building into ten small apartments, allowing materials to define the project: original elements are restored and new surfaces engage in a dialogue with Portuguese tradition.

Location: Lisbon, Portugal
Area: 600 sqm

Lapa is a district of Lisbon in constant transformation, and within this context, Ala.rquitectos’ residential project gives back to the city ten compact housing units, designed for one or two people. The project builds its identity through materials: the main façade is clad in light grey handcrafted ceramic tiles, a typically Portuguese solution, while original stonework, thresholds, and wrought iron railings are restored and reintegrated. The openings, with double-leaf lacquered wooden frames, play on two tones: dark grey for the fixed part and white for the movable one. On the rear elevation, white plaster and aluminium window frames lighten the chromatic palette, achieving a carefully balanced composition. The interiors are also defined by a contemporary and warm material palette. The walls are white, combined with concrete elements and a floor that becomes the only true decorative feature: a hexagonal pattern alternating wood and tiles in wet areas, creating a subtle optical effect.
