The renovation by Atzur arquitectura in Barcelona preserves the original Catalan vaults of this house

In Barcelona, the Ca na Baldu i en Diego (Catalan for "house of Baldu and Diego") is the result of a careful stitching process that transforms existing heterogeneous volumes into a new unified and coherent organism.

Architect: Atzur arquitectura
Project name: Ca na Baldu i en Diego
Location:
 Barcelona, Spain
Area: 180 sqm

While being immersed in the totality of white that characterizes this house in Barcelona, one's gaze immediately rests on the ceilings belonging to a different chapter of its history. The Catalan vault, a type of horizontal closure that originated in Catalonia itself from the 15th century, is found here in the typical "fragmented" version, made of several elements: the vaults. Atzur arquitectura decides to cover everything in white, with a choice aimed at making the coexistence of new and existing environments harmonious. Interrupting the monochromatic continuity are some wooden elements such as the staircase, the bookcase, the fixtures, but also tailor-made furniture such as the irregularly shaped island in the center of the kitchen, and, at the windowed corner, the bench lit by an emerald green ceramic coating.
