Terraforma rebuilds Bengt Carling’s dome

Inspired by the Swedish architect’s project, the geodesic structure will work as a temporary space to host panels, workshops and performances during the Milanese festival.

The Bucky Dome is a project by Milan-based studio Salottobuono and created for the Terraforma festival, taking place June 9, 10 and 11 in the gardens of Villa Arconati, Bollate.

The Bucky Dome consists of a geodesic structure with a diameter of 12 meters and a maximum height of 5 meters, composed of a network of wooden struts connected by metal nodes. It is inspired by the iconic Dome created by Swedish architect Bengt Carling and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1971. In that same year, Carling’s dome hosted artists Don and Moky Cherry together with a community of creatives for almost three months, becoming a total work of art and bridging the dichotomy of art and life, human and nature.

Salottobuono’s Bucky Dome was designed under the special supervision of Carling. It is inspired by Carling’s dome, its aspiration for transversality, and the desire to create an interweaving of musical, artistic and environmental dimensions. Indeed, during the festival, the geodesic structure will host a program of talks, workshops, and performances on topics related to art, design, and sustainability.

Among the activities hosted inside the Dome, on Saturday, June 11, artist and musician Naima Karlsson and Lawrence Kumpf, founder of Blank Forms, will present the anthology “Organic Music Societies.” In the afternoon, journalist Whitney Wei, together with architects Bengt Carling and Salottobuono’s Matteo Ghidoni, will conduct a panel on the relationship between architecture and creative experience, and the artistic duo Invernomuto will present Black Med, an ongoing project launched in 2018.

On Sunday, journalist Christine Kakaire will explore the importance of the archive as related to Black music innovation, artistic duo BABAU will present its latest project “looongplay,” and Yosephine Melfi and Laura Dell’Erba will conduct a tie die and eco printing workshop supported by Carhartt WIP.

Inside the Bucky Dome, tapestries realised by Vitelli and inspired by Moki Cherry’s textile works will also be displayed, along with one of her original iconic tapestries. The Bucky dome is supported by K-Way.
