David Chipperfield Architects transforms a former monastery into a workspace

In Germany, the Jacoby Studios project restores the architectural elements from the 17th century and adds new volumes in continuity with the original structure and the urban landscape.

Jacoby Studios is the new headquarters of a family-run company located in the German town of Paderborn, near Pader Springs. The project, designed by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, renovates a 17th century Capuchin monastery converted into a hospital in 1841 and dismantled in 2013.

The renovation work removes the additions made in the post-war period as a result of war damage, revealing the original structure clad in stone and brick. At the same time historical elements such as the chapel facade, that leads to the entrance courtyard, the central cloister, the east wing and the cellar are recovered.

The orthogonal structure of former monastery determines the addition of new volumes on the north, south and west sides: made of wood and concrete, these include from two to three levels each and show continuity with the original structure and the urban landscape.
