Stone blocks and climbing plants for a house in the Mexican mountains

Next to the MA House’s swimming-pool, in Tepoztlán, Cadaval & Solà-Morales build a gloriette for rest, leisure and care of the body.

MA Lounge is the pavilion that Cadaval & Solà-Morales realize in the garden of MA House, completed in 2016 in Tepoztlán. It stands by the pool, the latter's mineral deck ideally stretching out into the new architecture’s airy porch. MA Lounge also includes a single inside room, and more importantly a patio, equipped with a basin, showers and sinks, and also giving access to the sauna.

While the stretch of water and its surroundings are conceived as a place for social life, inclusive and open towards the park and the villa, MA Lounge’s patio is an intimate and introverted space, where one can take shelter to perform the rituals of body care. As for MA House, the other rooms do not overlook the patio, but they turn their back on it, in order to ensure its privacy.

The two buildings form part of a single house project, and they logically share the same selection of materials. These include the bearing walls' rustic local stone blocks and their sloping roof’s fair-faced concrete slabs. MA House’s most distinctive feature are the several floor-to-ceiling windows, carefully angled towards the mountains, rather than towards neighboring homes. On the other hand, vegetation defines MA Lounge’s specific character.

Climbing plants are apparently taking over the pavilion’s patio, as they colonize its walls and climb up to the roof. While observing the building from the main house, one will notice the contrast between the garden, a domestic, well-maintained green space, and the seemingly wild landscape surfacing from MA Lounge. It appears as a micro-fragment of the surrounding sub-tropical nature, artificially reconstructed and trapped by the robust stone walls.
