Urban regeneration and social ecology in Chiapas

Small colourful playgrounds in the working-class neighbourhoods of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Chiapa de Corzo express a long engagement process including workshops and open classes.

A series of timely interventions revitalises the public space of the Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Chiapa de Corzo cities, in Chiapas, which is the southernmost state and one of the poorest in Mexico. These projects by T+E Arquitectos and promoted by Infonavit, with the support of the Fundacion Hogares, intervene physically and on the perception of urban spaces.

San Juan, Las Torres and Canteras are densely populated neighbourhoods without infrastructure and community places. Sport, walking, conviviality and safety are real needs to which these projects respond with simplicity and austerity.

To promote a sense of belonging among citizens, an open process for the construction and management of public spaces has been conducted. Through classes and workshops, citizens have also acquired important skills on elementary construction techniques and the processing of local materials, specifically chosen to support the economy of Chiapas.
