For this residence in Fukushima, Japanese studio Life Style Koubou has managed to cleverly combine conflicting needs: to dialogue with the dense and chaotic urban context, without sacrificing domestic intimacy and spacious and airy spaces. The architects designed a building made up of six concrete "rings", which are stacked and slightly shifted from one another. Externally, the house appears to have have no openings, and is covered with regular concrete panels. A hybrid structure of steel and wood has been designed to create open and free internal spaces. Hidden by the concrete envelope, the private open spaces of the residence can be joined to the living-room area thanks to large sliding windows.
