Bronx. A children’s library in a reception center for women

Michael K. Chen, founder of New York-based studio MKCA, has made true a great desire of the smaller inhabitants of the Bronx. On the mezzanine floor of the Concourse House: Home for Women and Their Children he designed a library for children. The structure, which helps mothers in need and homeless people, has decided to give space to the cultural education of those children who do not have the chance to have access to all the books they need.

Under the barrel vault of the centre, MKCA studio designed an oval-shaped bookcase that takes up the curves of the ceiling and, at the same time, acts as a backdrop to the dense calendar of activities planned inside the library. Workshops or collective readings follow one another around the large ogival tables in white corian or on the ground, on carpets with abstract patterns and coloured poufs. A minimal space, with attention to every detail, devoted to kids.
