The conversion retains the three facades of the historic building, reopeinng the entrance onto the piazza, exploiting the liberty loggia at the first floor and creating a new terrace with facilities on the roof of the north tower.
The new centre of interchange was conceived as a single volume able to facilitate and rationalise all the multi-modal connections between the underground railway, regional trains, funicular and taxis.
New elements in steel and glass were introduced: the glazed roof of approx 100 sqm of the platform area, the double-height entrance hall to the platforms and the porous facade of the funicular with glass canopy.
The archeological route, not always recognised, that the trains follow on the famous Cumana regional line, is presented and integrated into the system of internal facades of the platform area with sixteen photographs by artist Mimmo Jodice. A system of mechanised ascent with six pairs of staircases and escalators on the south side of the station offers a direct connection between the station piazza and the baroque convent complex of the Santissma Trinità delle Monache.
