These were years of structural change that saw an economic transition from the “speculative bubble” to “post-bubble” depression, in which urban politics imprinted with a vision of the city in expansion gave way to a model of the city as a place of continuity. The architecture of Isozaki, Ando, Ito, Ban, Sejima, Fujimoto and Igarashi is presented with a broader interpretation and considered alongside such themes as finance and the real-estate market, cultural politics and territorial governance, technical development and information networks.
