This year the Serpentine Gallery’s
temporary pavilion, open until November
5, has been designed by Olafur
Eliasson with Norwegian architect Kjetil
Thorsen.
The pair, who have already
worked together in the past, have
created a dynamic building that
develops upwards from the gallery’s
horizontal space at ground level
with a spiral route up to a panoramic
point that looks out on Kensington
Gardens.
The whole building is clad in
timber panels, which are also laid on
curved surfaces where the variations in
reflected light give the effect of being
broken up into triangles. The inside, with
seats and steps, has been planned as an
arena to suit the programme, conceived
by the designers themselves, of
experimental events led by artists
and scientists. Silvia Monaco
