Paolo Soleri receives Cooper-Hewitt award

Born in Italy in 1919, Paolo Soleri, who moved to Arizona in 1956 where he set up the Cosanti Foundation and began work on Arcosanti, a city for 5000 residents based on the notion of Arcology (architecture and ecology), has been awarded the Cooper-Hewitt prize for lifetime’s achievement.

Alongside him, the other award winners are Paola Antonelli (design mind), Nike Inc (corporate achievement), Syd Mead (jury’s special commendation), Thom Mayne (architecture), 2x4 (communication), Maria Cornejo (fashion design), Michael Gabellini (interior design), Martha Schwarz (landscape architecture), Bill Stumpf (product design) and Craig Robins (design patron).

Nominated by a committee of 800 people from across the US, the winners received their awards on October 18, during National Design Week (15-21 October).
