A five-kilometre-long exhibition of architecture around the streets of London’s Smithfield area is how the organisers and director Peter Murray introduce the second edition of the Architecture Biennial. For ten days, from 16 to 25 June, it is offering a packed programme of meetings, debates, film shows, guided tours, exhibitions and events.
The initiatives, which have been conceived to involve as wide an audience as possible – in contrast with the more noble and institutional Venetian counterpart – this year concentrate on urban change in the British capital. The programme includes both serious and humorous events: from cycle tours and walks to interventions featuring a number of star names, such as Rem Koolhaas who promises to attract a thousand spectators to the Barbican and Renzo Piano who has even planned a “sermon” at Southwark Cathedral. Opening the festival will be a choreographic parade of sheep along the Millennium Bridge, lead by Sir Norman Foster, shepherd for a day. E.S.
