Terragni’s year

The programme has been set for the inauguration of the centenary of Giuseppe Terragni, the greatest Italian architect of the last century. On 18 April, exactly a hundred years after his birth, a series of events will take place at Como, involving various artistic disciplines and forming part of a broader programme of celebrations organised by the committee “GT04 Giuseppe Terragni architetto europeo”.

The day’s events begin at 10.00 with the opening to the public of Terragni’s buildings in Como, with guided tours and information signs – the Casa del Fascio, the Sant’Elia nursery, the “Novocomum” apartment block, the Giuliani Frigerio house, the Pedraglio house, the “casa del floricoltore” at Rebbio, housing in via Anzani and the Monumento ai Caduti.

At 12.00 at Villa Erba in Cernobbio, Daniel Libeskind will lead the inaugural conference, another conference at the Casa del Fascio will be held at 18.30 lead by Paolo Portoghesi.

At 15.00 the information point GT04 will be opened and an international competition Giuseppe Terragni will be announced, a commemorative stamp will be launched dedicated to the architect whilst a number of aeroplanes take off.

17.00 sees the opening of the exhibition “Terragni architetto europeo” and John Warwicker from the studio Tomato will present the book “Atlante Terragni”.

At 20.30 at the Teatro Sociale in Como the official opening ceremony for the events will be held followed by the show “Omaggio a Terragni” by the Piccolo Teatro from Milan. Bringing to an end an intense day, at 22.30, framed by light and projections at the Casa Del Fascio and in piazza del Popolo, a multimedia exhibition will be opened on the most famous architecture of Terragni.

A series of articles on Terragni revisited with photography by Paolo Rosselli and reinterpreted by leading contemporary architects such as Steven Holl, Iñaki Abalos and Peter Eisenman will be published in Domus over the forthcoming months. Domus magazine and the Domusweb site will be following the events that continue up until 2005.
