Cooper Union chooses Thom Mayne
After having evaluated 150 candidates and chosen four finalists – Zaha Hadid, Kohn Pederson and Fox and Rafael Moneo – the Cooper Union has chosen Thom Mayne of Morphosis to design the new site for the engineering faculty that will substitute the existing Hewitt Building. The building – 18 000 square metres of floor area on nine storeys in Astor Place – is the first in New York for the Californian practice, working together with local architects Gruzen Samton LLP.
“It is especially meaningful and important to me to be commissioned to do our first New York building for the Cooper Union” was Mayne’s comment. “There is a synergy between the values of Morphosis and those of the Cooper Union that will result in the creation of an iconographic building that represents the future of the institution and that adds to the character and quality of such an important neighbourhood”.
The studio, founded in 1972 and based in Santa Monica, is to start work right away to develop the scheme. Building work should begin by 2006.
