Florence, Foster and Arup chosen for new station

London practice Norman Foster and Partners, along with Ove Arup, are to design the new station in Florence for high speed trains. The decision was taken just a few days ago by the jury of the competition set by Tav earlier this year – a jury which included Gae Aulenti, Pio Baldi, Francesco Dal Co and Josef Paul Kleihues.

The project covers over 45,000 square metres in the ex Macelli area, a short distance away from the ex Fiat in viale Belfiore where French architect Jean Nouvel is already working on a conference centre, shopping centre, hotel and underground car park. In second place was Japanese architect Arata Isozaki followed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in third place.

The railway station for Tuscany’s major city is part of an extensive programme of investments on the part of the Ferrovie dello Stato – which as well as Florence will also involve Rome, Turin and Bologna – to improve the national network of high speed trains.
