The programme includes a tour of the cathedral – from the waterfall and swimming pool created by Lita Albuquerque to the bronze door by sculptor Robert Graham and painted hangings by John Nava – a practical demonstration of the power of the organ with over 6000 pipes, formal dinner, multimedia presentation of the history of the cathedral and finally dancing. A younger and less formal party (and above all less expensive at ‘only’ 125 dollars a ticket) will be given for another 400 guests and will be held simultaneously on another side of the square.
Much wanted by cardinal Mahony to replace the cathedral of St Vibiana damaged by earthquake, the church – the first cathedral to be built in the United States for a quarter of a century – has been designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. Inside – 4400 square metres – to house a congregation of 2600. Materials include a concrete exterior, stone floor, timber ceilings, copper roof and alabaster for the inside of the large windows. Also included is an insulated ‘earthquake proof’ structure.
