Zaha Hadid: BMW’s “fluid” centre

An 800m long production centre with automobiles floating back and forth on a conveyor belt in front of which office workers sit behind their desks. The winning scheme by Zaha Hadid for the BMW factory in Leipzig seeks to eliminate the traditional division between blue and white collar workers by placing them side by side.

The conveyor belts move inside a 40 000 square metre space with a steel structure, within which are organised the test areas for quality control, accounts department as well as restaurants and recreation areas “This is an integral design feature drawing on the inherent dynamism of vehicle movement to generate a sense of fluidity” explained Hadid, “This building is the BMW braincell and organisation is transparent and flexible”.
Building should start next January and is due to finish in 2004.
