A huge glass box (10 metres high and 55 metres long) suspended over the railway lines and a 300m long steel bridge to link two areas of Rome, Pietralata and Nomentano. Inside, a series of “globes” to house the more exclusive functions (VIP lounges, offices with internet facilities, restaurants and conference rooms). This, in brief, is the project selected as winner of a competition to design the new Rome station, Tiburtina which will form a point of interchange for high speed trains travelling to and from the South of Italy. Designed by Paolo Desideri, who was selected as one of the finalists in the international competition set by the Ferrovie dello Stato and the Comune di Roma in March 2000, along with three other architects, Aldo Aymonino, Francesco Purini and Otto Steidle.
The station, the first in Italy to be elevated, will make use of some innovative energy conscious solutions for heating in winter and air conditioning in the summer. A large shopping centre and eight office blocks are also planned for the Pietralata area and a hypermarket, hotel, new council headquarters and a building for sports and cultural activities for the Nomentano area.
