Il complesso di residenze progettato dallo studio inglese WilkinsonEyre richiama la tipologia dei crescent, insediamenti “a mezzaluna” aperti verso la campagna.

Modulare, prefabbricato e organizzato in cluster per dar vita a spazi condivisi minuti e informali, come nei piccoli villaggi: il nuovo campus del Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, progettato dallo studio WilkinsonEyre può ospitare una cinquantina di studenti e alcuni dei professori in visita all’università di Malmesbury, in Inghilterra. I moduli abitativi di dimesioni 8x4m hanno una struttura di CLT – Cross Laminated Timber, ovvero pannelli di legno prefabbricati che includono già uno strato di isolamento, rendendo la posa in situ facile e veloce. Le unità sono assemblate in piccoli gruppi su due o tre piani, sfalsate tra di loro e con alcuni dei blocchi a sbalzo, in modo da rendere esplicito il sistema strutturale e far vedere le proprietà strutturali dei pannelli CLT.

All’interno il legno rimane a vista, per dare alle unità abitative un’estetica accogliente e calda. Queste presentano un nucleo di servizi nella parte posteriore e un unico ambiente aperto che si affaccia verso il centro del campus con una parete completamente vetrata. Le residenze sono disposte a semicerchio, richiamando i tradizionali insediamenti di case a schiera chiamati crescent, la cui traduzione letterale è appunto “mezzaluna”. Un padiglione circolare, chiamato Roundhouse è il punto focale del masterplan. Si tratta di una struttura aperta di vetro e metallo, formata dalla sovrapposizione di due cilindri e che ospita gli spazi sociali principali del nuovo campus.
