Benfica has unveiled a master plan for the renovation of the Estádio da Luz and the surrounding neighborhood. The project, led by Populous in collaboration with Saraiva + Associados, will modernize the stadium and add public spaces and mixed functions, transforming the area into a year-round active hub. In addition to improving the fan experience, the intervention aims to create a civic asset for the city and ensure the club's economic sustainability.
The redevelopment includes new facilities around the stadium--from a multipurpose indoor arena for major sporting and cultural events to a semi-Olympic public swimming pool--while two multipurpose arenas will replace the current indoor sports pavilions.
Supporters remain at the center of the project. In front of the main façade will rise a large pedestrian plaza inspired by Lisbon's historic squares, which will become the centerpiece of the pre and post-match events, enlivened by music and giant screens, surrounded by refreshment stands. Usable beyond match days, this plaza will strengthen the link between stadium and neighborhood. The statue of the legendary Eusébio will be relocated at the main entrance.
The architecture of the Estádio da Luz, on the other hand, will undergo a major renovation with a new contemporary façade that will reinterpret the shape of the stadium while retaining the iconic roof arches and integrating vertical elements capable of filtering light and heat to improve interior comfort. The structure will include a network of programmable LEDs, a digital skin that will transform the stadium into an urban beacon during game nights and adapt its colors according to events. Inside, a fourth level will be built above the last ring that will house club offices, lounges, hospitality areas, and commercial spaces, with the aim of making the facility active outside match days.
The master plan embraces sustainability principles, introducing photovoltaic panels on roofs, green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems, and new tree plantings to increase environmental resilience. The goal is to enhance the sports experience while providing lasting benefits to the community.
