A contemporary impluvium dialogues with the sky: a pavilion at 2000 meters above sea level

Mexican studio Choza experiments with a stone and wood shelter inspired by the Roman impluvium, in dialogue with the mountainous climate of the country's north.

Situated at an altitude of 2,180 meters in the Sierra de Arteaga in Argentina, the architecture is a small pavilion conceived by Choza - Espacio de Arquitectura as a space for rest, observation and contemplation of the mountain landscape. The architecture adopts precisely the principle of the impluvium, the rainwater collection basin typical of Roman houses, transforming it into a distributive matrix and environmental device.

The circular pavilion is organized around a central uncovered courtyard, toward which the openings are oriented and from which the interior path is articulated. This arrangement allows the building to be open to natural light and ventilation while maintaining an introverted character that isolates it from its wooded surroundings. The predominant use of local materials-stone for the perimeter walls and pine wood for the roof structures-reduces the environmental impact and places the project in the region's building tradition.

The pitched roof converges toward the center of the courtyard, where there is a pool that collects rainwater and reflects the sky. This element accentuates the connection between construction and nature, underscoring the climatic and symbolic role of water in a context prone to extreme temperature fluctuations.

The pavilion results as a typological exercise that retrieves historical models and adapts them to a contemporary context. The absence of a predetermined function allows for flexible uses: a place to stay, a refuge, a meeting or observation point.
