New Balance's new sneakers have a 3D-printed heel

The company debuted a new 3D-printing platform with a contemporary remake of the popular 990 that's 10% lighter.

Back in 2017 New Balance partnered with Massachusetts-based Formlabs to develop a new 3D-printed platform for its shoes. Now the American company has released the first pair of sneakers derived from that partnership, the 990 Sport TripleCell (from the name of the platform itself). The shoes are a remake of the popular 990 model, with a 3D-printed heel that offers great cushioning while still being 10% lighter that a regular injection mold element. To 3D-print the cushion, Formlabs used its patented Rebound Resign, which the company says can perform as well as thermoplastic under every circumstance. The 990 Sport TripleCell (US$185) is being produced in limited quantity and it’s already sold-out on NewBalance’s website. In September the company will launch a cheaper model, the Fuel Cell Echo (US$175), which uses the TripleCell mesh for the forefoot of the sneaker.
