Garmin’s new MARQ smart tool watches

5 watches, designed for sports car enthusiasts, athletes, pilots and sailors, that combine the potential of digital with the charm of analogue.

For watch enthusiasts, “tool watch” is a very clear and univocal concept. It refers to timepieces designed to perform specific tasks other than simply showing the time. Just think of diving watches that feature rotating bezels and reinforced cases in order to withstand extreme depths, or pilots’ watches with GMT indicators. Garmin has now decided to introduce its MARQ series, a line-up of five “modern” and smart tool watches designed for specific tasks.

All five timepieces have a very classic and sophisticated look, as if they were traditional watches. They are made of precious materials such as titanium, leather and steel, with fine details or jacquard motifs, and only the 1.2-inch display reveals their high-tech nature. As we said, each watch is built for a specific task.

Marq Expedition, for example, is designed for high-altitude lovers. It includes built-in topographic maps and real-time ascent data, while a Pulse OX1 sensor monitors your blood oxygen saturation levels. Obviously, it also monitors your heart rate and allows you to track your route.

Marq Captain is perfect for life at sea and sailing navigation thanks to a regatta timer enhanced with GPS technology that pinpoints the start with extreme precision, the tack assist to help you determine whether the boat is sailing upwind or downwind, and the man overboard button to press in case of emergency.

The third member of the Marq family is Aviator, obviously for pilots. The worldwide aeronautical database and the Direct-to emergency navigation are combined with NEXRAD weather radar and Garmin avionics integration that ensures maximum control from the cockpit. Finally, a 24-hour bezel and two additional time zones help you keep track of longer flights.

Let’s get off the plane and hop on a limited-edition car. Marq Driver fuels the passion for racing with over 250 preloaded global racetracks. The tachymeter bezel reminds of old driver watches, while Auto Lap splits and live delta time are some of the many useful smart features.

Let’s conclude with Athlete, the sportiest of the family. In addition to the classic biometrics, it also shows your recovery time and VO2 max scales on the bezel, so that you can monitor your performance and progress on the spot.

You can then find integrated maps and the best local running and cycling routes. Clearly, music is also important: you can store up to 2,000 songs in your watch, or access music apps such as Spotify and listen through headphones with Bluetooth® technology.

The Marq range starts at £1,400 ($1,500) for the Athlete and finishes at £2,250 ($2,500) for the Driver.
