Wars, revolutions, conflicts: Gabriele Micalizzi’s pictures on show in Milan

“A Kind of Beauty” gathers the deeply evocative photographs taken by the reporter in the most dreadful theaters of war of the last twenty years, allowing us to question ourselves.

From April 4th to June 28th, 2024, 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS Gallery will present the works of photographer Gabriele Micalizzi. The exhibition, entitled “A KIND OF BEAUTY” and curated by Tiziana Castelluzzo, features a selection of photographs – in black and white and color – depicting the main conflicts of the last two decades, from the Arab revolutions to the Middle Eastern conflicts against the caliphate, to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Israeli attacks in Palestine.

Micalizzi – on the war fronts since he was 23 years old and an experimenter in various visual arts, from graffiti to tattoos, through videos to photography – thanks to a powerful aesthetic sensibility has developed the ability to create images that delineate a world of its own, with its coherence, autonomy, and symbolic power, becoming something more than documentary photographs, or testimonies – although they are. Micalizzi somehow manages to organize the most dramatic and chaotic reality, achieving a deeply evocative composition. Thus, these works start from a specific occasion to dialogue with a broader dimension, creating a free field, in which the spectator – conveyed by the direct experience of the photographer – can question himself, in turn, firsthand.

During the Milan Art Week, from April 8th to 14th, a selection of Gabriele Micalizzi’s works will also be available as part of the new edition of MIA Photo Fair, from April 10th to 14th, 2024, at Allianz MiCo Milano Congressi. Furthermore, on the occasion of the Design Week, from April 15th to 21st, Micalizzi will develop a project together with Domus for the Design Week, of which we will tell you more soon.
