As proven by the sudden and sad demise of Van Moof, the e-bike market is becoming a competitive and harsh endeavor, especially now that the pandemic craze for e-bikes (and government incentives) has died out. The French e-bike manufacturer Angell Mobility, though, has found an original and sustainable way to support the sales of its bikes—partnering with a carmaker on a limited-edition rebranding of its most popular models. That's exactly what the Mini E-bike 1 is. Available in only 1959 units worldwide, the e-bike is a special edition of Angell's Cruiser models. It comes in two sizes, S and M, and in two color configurations, Ocean Wave Green and Vibrant Silver.
While Angell writes that the "Mini E-Bike 1 design concentrates the best of French and English industrial craftsmanship", it's quite clear that the bike's design and technical features are more or less the same as the Cruiser. Admittedly, there are some additional details, such as the leather-free saddle and handlebar grips, crafted by Brooks England, and the pedals, thermoplastic chain guard, and mudguards, which seamlessly integrate with the not-so-novel bike design.
The main differentiator is the price. While the Angell Cruiser S and M retail for €2990, the Mini E-Bike 1 starts at 3490€. Preorders have already begun, and Angell aims to ship the E-Bike 1 in January 2024. The product was designed as a collection piece for Mini Enthusiasts, but it remains unclear why a potential e-biker should spend almost 500 additional Euros on the same bike with a Mini paint job.
