SHoP Architects begins construction on US consulate building in Milan

The project, inspired by the liberty architecture of the area, will host a new cubic-shaped building in milled stone.

In Milan, US studio SHoP Architects has began construction on the US new consulate, a 10-acre diplomatic campus. Located in the Piazzale Accursio area, the project takes cues from the site’s existing neoclassical architecture.

In fact, it will be organized around the Palazzina Liberty, a 20th-century neoclassical structure, which will be restored to function as main entrance point. The design will be highly symmetrical and SHoP will rebuild a covered walkway, stretching horizontally across the site and supported by Tuscan-style columns.

SHoP will add also a new cubic office building, rising above the surrounding low-lying volumes and feature milled stone panels.

Natural stone is an eternal material

Now in its 59th edition, Marmomac returns to Verona from September 23 to 26 to showcase the role of stone in contemporary design.
