New Headquarters of Roma Tre University’s Rectorate by Mario Cucinella

The project by Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), is part of a broader urban redevelopment program of the Ostiense-Marconi-Garbatella area and has the goal of creating and adapting spaces for the University settlement.

The project for the new headquarters of Roma Tre University’s Rectorate – developed by MC A, winner of the competition for project financing – gives great attention to sustainability and environmental issues, aiming to minimize the energy demand necessary for its own functions.

The three volumes which compose the project were conceived and oriented starting from the analysis of site’s characteristics – in terms of temperatures, irradiation, exposure to winds and precipitation. Their elliptical shape – which remind us of the Milanese building by SANAA of the Bocconi University – allows in fact a thinning on the East and West fronts, reducing the phenomena of glare and overheating during the summer. For the same reason, terraces and overhangs have been planned on the South front. Extreme care has also been given to the study of the greenery, as an element of well-being and improvement of the microclimate.

The building hosts the formative functions of the CLA Institute, the secretarial offices of the university, the spaces of the Rectorate and a large auditorium, which thanks to its transparent facades accentuates the dialogue between the university and the city, showing on via Ostiense the activities that take place in it – conferences, exhibitions, events.

Mario Cucinella, the founder of the studio, said: “These last years were certainly not easy, but they gave us very strong and clear signals that came directly from young people. Their ability to change, understand and reinvent themselves in the face of the challenges that history is facing us has been admirable. In the Little Prince there is a very beautiful phrase: 'All adults were children, but only a few remember it'. The best skill that can be taught to young people is open-mindedness, the desire to discover, curiosity towards the new, the sense of continuous challenge".
