Inter and Milan have announced their final decision. Norman Foster will design the new Milan stadium, to be built next to the Giuseppe Meazza stadium. This decision followed an international competition involving 13 architectural firms, as we recently reported.
Among the candidates were some well-known names: Populous, specialising in sports facilities; Herzog & de Meuron, designers of the Allianz Arena in Munich and the 'Bird's Nest' in Beijing, as well as two as-yet-unpublished European projects; and BDP Partners in collaboration with BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), which is building its 'lying skyscraper' a few kilometres away in the CityLife area.
Foster, guest editor of Domus in 2024 and one of the most prestigious names in world architecture, will design the stadium in collaboration with Manica. Manica specialises in sports facilities and was already involved with Milan in the preliminary design for the San Donato stadium. The club put this forward in 2023, when there was still talk of building two different stadiums for Inter and Milan.
As part of an urban regeneration project covering approximately 281,000 square metres, Foster + Partners and Manica are expected to unveil a 71,500-seat stadium shortly. It will be structured around two large rings, with an inclination designed to ensure optimal visibility for spectators from every section.
It seems that the aim of Milan and Inter is to submit the urban development plan to the City of Milan in the first half of 2026.
