People don't have enough fun at home, Ikea has discovered

As explained in the latest Life at Home Report, more than a third of people worldwide believe they don't have enough fun at home. This finding also inspired the content of Ikea's latest Fuorisalone exhibition.

For over a decade, Ikea has been dedicated to producing the Life at Home Report, a global survey aimed at providing an updated and insightful snapshot of people's desires and needs regarding domestic life, using both as reference points to establish our happiness at home.

For the 2024 Report, which inspired the brand's double installation at the Milano Design Week 2025, Ikea interviewed 38,630 people across 39 countries, conducting qualitative and quantitative research, as well as trend analyses, to better understand the cultural factors that influence and reshape our idea of home. This year’s study is entirely dedicated to the theme of joy in living spaces, one of the eight emotional needs essential to our sense of belonging and well-being, with the aim of uncovering what prevents people from experiencing it fully.

The research identified four key ingredients for a more fulfilling home experience: physical and mental well-being, everyday enjoyment, authenticity of space, and the value of relationships. From the importance of a cozy bed to the need for spaces that encourage creativity and connection, the report portrays a vision of home where self-expression, comfort, and play are essential drivers of happiness.

Interpreting these trends through inspiring solutions that make the home an authentic extension of personal life, Ikea has introduced at the last Fuorisalone a series of concept rooms developed in collaboration with the Valencian Ulises Studio, known for its surreal architectural and design approach, from the extreme relaxation of “Bedrotting” to the childhood nostalgia of “Kidulting”, and through “Important Conversations”, “Harmony in a Smart Home”, “Biophilic Design”, and the vibrant spaces of “Dopamine Décor”.
