McDonald's has recently filed several trademarks for a virtual restaurant operated in the Metaverse (whatever it will end up being) that will deliver actual food in the real world.
The idea is simple: you're wandering in the virtual world with your headset, you get hungry (for real), and you visit a virtual McDonald's or McCafe. The food you order virtually is then delivered to your door by a real delivery person.
The trademark filing doesn't mean that McDonald's is already developing such a concept. Still, the company considers the Metaverse trend relevant enough to spend time and resources to keep its competitors from taking full control of the hybrid delivery idea.
Among other trademarks filed by MacDonald's, one covers "virtual food and beverage products" sold as NFTs. Think about it: instead of eating a special edition Big Mac, in the future we'll be able to own one as a digital surrogate and avoid cholesterol altogether.
McDonald's isn't alone trying to reserve a spot in the Metaverse. Bakery brand Panera has filed a trademark for "Paneraverse" that includes NFTs, a virtual reward program, and more.
