Kvadrato, an event to explore architectural storytelling

Domus joins forces with Architectuul and Volume. The partnership’s first initiative is an online event dealing with contemporary architectural narratives.

Architecture is a discipline, but, at the same time, it is the physical environment in which we live in and are surrounded by daily. As space is the element that is often shared, it needs to be negotiated and therefore it is a priority to open up a conversation. To explore the state of the art of architectural storytelling, Domus established a partnership with Architectuul and Volume: the first initiative is an online event on April 30, at 4.30 (CEST).

By involving various producers of architecture and space narratives – such as institutions, magazines, curators, editors, architects and memers – the event will explore the contemporary media landscape, including online, print and social media.

The kick-off is a lecture by CCAs curator Francesco Garutti followed by a round table Paper Against Pixels, with Cesar Reyes + Ethel Baraona Pohl (DPR), Kieran Long (ArkDes) and Davide Tommaso Ferrando. This part of the event focuses on the shift from the printed to the digital medium, exploring how institutions and magazines adapted to this new paradigm and how blogs and social platforms multiplied the producers of contents.

To emphasise this idea, The Meme Grammar brings memers Alvar Aaltissimo and Blank Gehry together. These two experiences focus on why and how a satirical twist on architectural communication came to be.

The round table Reporting as Activism delves into alternative takes on architectural communication. Speakers include two international networks of architects and students respectively: Failed Architecture and Mies.TV.

Building commonalities is about the involvement of a larger audience in space-making and architectural production. The round table involves Rita Adamo (La Rivoluzione delle Seppie), Anne Beate Hovind + Lode Vranken, Gideon Boie (BAVO), Juanito Jones (Inteligencias Colectivas) to present their work and discuss their approaches.

As a conclusion, “The Artifice” by Francesca Bertin will be screened. The short movie narrates today’s life in the streets and buildings of Zingonia (Bergamo, Italy), a private a new town built by enterpreneur Renzo Zingone in the 1960s.
