Art Basel Hong Kong, canceled due to coronavirus, fixes the losses by online sales

If it is true that technology is by our side, Art Basel Hong Kong has found the way to use it at its best: ready the online viewing rooms for a virtual visit of the fair.

Hong Kong

The ongoing coronavirus outbreak in China keeps on challenging the art world by blocking events, openings and galleries’ participation abroad. Even the world’s most important fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, has succumbed to the international emergency. The loss – economic, and probably also in terms of trust – was considerable, since the fair paid back 75% of the total fees it had collected from participating exhibitors.

Among this desperate situation, however, a way to contain the damage was found by using technology. Art Basel Hong Kong has therefore announced that sales will be runned online, from 20 to 25 March 2020, through “online viewing rooms”. And, as usual, the 18th and 19th will take place the VIP preview days. Virtual tours will be accessible on the Art Basel website or by the free app.
