Holy Handmade

Wallpaper* asked 35 designers and as many companies or artisans to interpret the sacred theme in the “Holy Handmade” exhibition. Beside it stands the irreverent and profane Seletti Toilet Paper bar. #MDW2017

In keeping with this year’s location – a deconsecrated church now home to the Mediateca Santa Teresa – Wallpaper* chose the sacred as the sole underlying theme of its now customary design, production and craft overview. Thirty-five designers and as many companies or artisans were invited by the British lifestyle bible to decline the many nuances of the sacred – from collective ritual to personal reflection and secular/spiritual approaches.

The two floors of the historic building alternate – to mention but some of the works on display – a long veil/confessional designed by the Bouroullec brothers + Lesage Intérieur; a “sustainable” sarcophagus by Tom Dixon + Paper Factor; ten (new) commandments by Yves Béhar + Paul Antonio Scribe; a small fine casing mixing the sacred and the profane by Francesco Librizzi + De Castelli; and a tabernacle by Giacomo Moor + Emmemobili. Plus a never-ending stairway (thanks to a play of mirrors) by Snohetta + Everything Elevated and monolithic water sources by Tino Seubert + Pibamarmi.

Le Refuge by Marc Ange, with the Invisible Collection, is a contemplative, palm-shaded daybed installation in the Mediateca garden

There simply had to be a profane counterbalance, here taking the form of an irreverent bar set up by Seletti Toilet Paper and a colourful installation by Gufram.
