Cooking Table

With the Cooking Table Moritz Putzier calls the rigid conditions of our daily kitchen live into question and suggests a new way of cooking and dining.

Cooking Table
The preparation of food as a creative act and communicative part of the common meal formed the main basis of the design analysis with Moritz Putzier’s diploma thesis.
To what extent can we reduce to basics these days without moving backward? What would a kitchen scenario look like if we take away all fancy cooking tools and electrical equipment? What do we really need to create goodfood and dine with our friends or family and keep this ritual whose roots extend so far back into the past alive.

The Cooking Table is focused on the creation of the experience not on the food itself. Traditional and original values are picked up and transformed into the present time. The project calls the rigid conditions of our daily kitchen live into question and suggests a new way of cooking and dining.
The thoughts and solutions developed build a flexible interaction between cooking, dining and social cohabitation. Always keeping the individual person at the center.
Single cooking elements have been designed. Each of them embodies an idea and provides an answer in form of an object. The intention of this project was not to make the design for an entire kitchen interior but rather to bring out the aspects that seem the most essential.

The Table forms the social center of a household. It is the place were we meet in our daily life to rest, to communicate, to work or to play – alone or together. At the same time the table serves as a cooking table. It provides space to prepare food, to cook and to dine.
The so called stoolbench is a combination of a slightly elevated stool and a slim shaped bench. It serves to rest. The unusual geometry allows a playful use either for sitting or leaning.
An ensemble consisting of three different sized ceramic bowls build a link between the two activities cooking and eating. The prepared food such as cutted vegetables can be poured or mixed inside the bowls before getting cooked or fried. But also after cooking the food can be kept there to store or to be
served while eating. The lid of each bowl is not only to keep the food fresh but also a cutting board.

The fire realized as movable gas burners complete the product family, as well as the idea of the cooking scenario developed by this project. By pulling the two table tops apart, the gas burners can be clicked inside little modules that slide in a hidden track. These modules can be moved easily by hands from one side of the table to the other. Thus the stove turns into flexible cooking tools that can be adapted to individual needs in terms of cooking position and number of fire places. A ceramic bowl surrounding the gas burner while cooking serves as pad and heat isolation.

The Cooking Table is part of Moritz Putzier’s diplom thesis named Back to tomorrow, Dining culture through the change of time, presented at the University of Arts Bremen and won the Interieur Awards 2014.
