Domus 969 on newsstands now

SANAA, Atelier Bow-Wow, Junya Ishigami, Kisho Kurokawa, sustainability, and more — the May issue of Domus takes a deep plunge into Japanese architecture.

The May issue of Domus takes a deep plunge into Japanese architecture, devoting itself to a thorough exploration of the past and present of the discipline in the Eastern country. We visit SANAA's new Vitra warehouse, a contemporary example of the sublime; Atelier Bow-Wow's Koisuru-Buta laboratory, a new model of factory designed around its social agenda; Junya Ishigami's studio, exploring new aspects design philosophy; and explore the true meaning of the words "recycling" and "reuse", which are firmly embedded in contemporary Japanese architecture.

Issue 969 also surveys a series of public buildings in Japan, created by a large group of architects working directly with local communities, and revisits Kisho Kurokawa's Nakagin Capsule Tower— an icon of Japanese Metabolism — through the eyes of two of its youngest residents.

The May issue of Domus visits the Cannes MIPIM real-estate fair, observing the dynamics of contemporary city-making; explores the design wars between Samsung and Apple, wondering what factors most affect the success of consumer electronics; and in the latest SuperNormal installment, wonders how to trigger empathy between humans and the latest humanoid holograms, which work as virtual assistants in airports all over the world.
