Fire damages Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse

Yesterday afternoon, a fire spread in the building designed by Le Corbusier in the 1950s.

L'Unité d'habitation, which we published a few months back in our From the Archive feature, in its first appearance on the pages of Domus, was engulfed in flames on Thursday, 9 February afternoon.

The fire, which spread from one of the apartments in the first floor, was contained this morning. The flames caused the evacuation of the entire building, and five residents were reported to have suffered minor injuries. Eight apartments and four of the rooms in the hotel inside the Cité were heavily damaged, and according to the French daily Le Monde, many more – although the final number has yet to be revealed – were damaged by smoke and by operations to contain the flames.
