A psychic archetype as well as an architectural one, the house remains solidly anchored to pre-established and conservative models – Burr studio argues – because it is too difficult for us to imagine it according to canons that accommodate our changing lifestyles and needs.
A former shop in Madrid becomes a house with its own given name
Challenging norms and habits repeated unconsciously, Spanish studio Burr redistributes a former retail space and prepares it to meet the upcoming needs of its inhabitants.

Questioning conventions, the Madrid-based architects modify a former commercial space, adapting it to a flexible residential use that can be modulated over time. The home, personified by an actual person's name - María Guerrero - is located on the ground floor and is currently separated into two dwellings divided by an acoustic panel. Depending on the future economic resources of the owners or the expansion of their family unit, the space of each apartment is arranged to be expanded and contracted as needed.
The spirit of adaptation demonstrated through conversion from retail to residential space is also underscored by the use of coatings and finishes that nod to the building's past. One example is the yellow tiles, a reference to the gym that once occupied part of the structure.
Even the kitchen has something to say about challenging conventions. Following an explicit desire to break away from Ikea kitchens, Burr has designed a large modular piece of furniture developed together with CUBRO studio. High to the ceiling, the cabinet is designed to integrate multiple containers to store personal objects, overcoming the specialization related to utensils and food usually associated with kitchen furniture.
