Cooling eco-umbrella by Carlo Ratti Associati for Sammontana

Together with Italo Rota and Chuck Hoberman, CRA designed umbrellas that produce electricity using sunlight. The first 12 will be installed at BAM in Milan.

Carlo Ratti Associati has designed a high-tech eco-umbrella for Sammontana, which not only provides protection from UV rays, but also produces coolness and electricity using sunrays.

The first 12 umbrellas created will be available from 12 June at LidoBAM, the green oasis for relaxation in Milan’s Biblioteca degli Alberi, in Porta Nuova district. The sustainable umbrella, developed in collaboration with Italo Rota and engineer Chuck Hoberman, is equipped with photovoltaic panels and a faceted surface that absorbs light from all angles.

The technology used to generate electricity is inspired by the solar batteries in NASA’s space vehicles and is employed to power a refrigerator for drinks and fresh food. When connected together, the umbrellas – 250 cm high and 320 cm in diameter when open – also provide power for an entire ice cream freezer counter.

The project promoted by Sammontana envisions a new sustainable experience for Italian beaches.
