The Drift collective, in collaboration with Avant Arte, presents Another Future, their new project with a limited edition of only 50 pieces, with the sale - at 2,600 euros - already soldout after not even two days. Taking up old works like Dandelight (2007) and Fragile Future (2014), the project narrates the story of two distinct worlds - nature and technology - which harmonize and become one. Founded in 2007 by artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, Drift investigates the hidden phenomena and properties of nature through the use of technology, and Another Future is a perfect model of this philosophy.
In the rigid plexiglas parallelepiped, designed to be installed on the wall, it contains an elementary electrical circuit that connects what at first glance look like simple dandelion flowers. In reality the seeds of the flowers have been glued one by one on LED bulbs. “After 15 years of studying dandelions, I have seen so much intelligence in this plant that it doesn't have a central brain,” says artist Lonneke Gordijn. “There is so much tactility. Somehow this plant feels its environment and is aware of it, in a completely different way than humans and animals think. I could talk for hours about dandelions.”
For the collective, turning dandelions into works of art was a starting point for various creative explorations. Gordijn and Nauta have, in fact, been collecting and collecting it for many years, enriching and evolving their understanding of its extraordinary natural architecture. The dandelion flower embodies the idea of overlapping strength and fragility, softness and energy. For each project Nauta and Gordijn have personally collected and selected each flower, reconstructing it seed by seed around the LED bulb.
Through these deconstructive processes, the artists' main intention is to investigate the essential mechanisms of the Earth, highlighting the essential need to re-establish our bond with it. In this way, these nine luminous flowers represent not only a piece of furniture but also a manifesto. “Nature is our past, present and future,” says Ralph Nauta. “Technology is an extension of Nature and should only be used to connect humanity to Nature, not to disconnect.”
