Aesop opted for a historic building to open its first shop in Amsterdam. While it has been hosted in a former deli in Milan, in a laundry in New York’s Upper West Side and in a traditional house in Kanazawa, Japan, now it is the turn of a candy shop in a 17th century building on the corner of Utrechtestraat.
Dominated by arched cabinets, white wood panelling, antique clocks and copper compositions, the store designed by Valentin Loellmann studio is enveloped in a warm, shaded and timeless atmosphere.
The brand’s recognizable packaging – the brown small lotion bottles reminding the ones in medieval pharmacies – stands out and, at the same time, blurs among the wooden niches of the displays, converting the store into an ancient and precious herbalist shop.
A walnut counter and basins in Belgian limestone, designed to test the botanical products directly on the skin, overlook a wide corener-window.
