In Thailand a kindergarten designed by architecture students

Four colorful pavilions in Thailand designed by university students: a space thought for the community that provides educational and recreational spaces.

In Dum Yai, Thailand, Pau Sarquella and Carmen Torres with Chulalongkorn University students designed a kindergarten following the annual program Design Build for Community sponsored by International Program in Design and Architecture (INDA), that aims to provide communal spaces to underpriviledged people. Bang Nong Saeng Kindergarten was designed by university students with the help of instructors, workers and villagers, method that contributed to a collaborative approach in the building process. The space, distributed on 380 sqm, provides education beside recreational and meeting areas, distributed inside and outside, where a circular tribune is located.

The project consists of four pavilions provided by hut-like roofs and circular walls made of painted concrete blocks to define rooms underneath, while pink coverings offer shade in the courtyard and at the sides of the structure. The construction uses a modular system to be built and completed through the years, when funds will be available: with a project including four roofs, only three of them have been arranged till now. The structure is easy to assemble and it’s able to increase the built surface reducing the costs. The Kindergarten is provided by a passive ventilation system through solar chimneys that make the climate a positive resource that connects interior and exterior.
