In Afghanistan carpet weaving is a craft passed down for generations, mother to daughter, for centuries. For the Dubai Design Week 2017, international designer Nada Debs, founder of East & East, has been commissioned a project for the Fatima Bint Mohammed Initiative (FBMI) which promotes local craftsmanship and the empowerment of women throughout Afghanistan.

The large carpets call for attention for their peculiar shapes and meaning. It looks like a contemporary carpet was born out of a traditional one and vice versa. Through the use of geometries the two interlace with each other and overlap. The playful geometries are implemented with colours obtained with natural vegetable dye and local wool which is handspun. The strong visual value of the collection made it an object in between art and design, on show both at the Dubai Design Week and at the Abu Dhabi Art fair. Nada Debs’ goal is to reinforce the role of carpets as a means for social empowerment and an extra value in the world of interiors.
