Albe & Lica

Linea Rossa is a film that tells the extraordinary professional and human story of Albe Steiner and his civil and intellectual commitment.

Produced and directed by Enzo Coluccio and Franco Bocca Gelsi, who own the two independent Milan production companies Ardaco and Orda D’Oro Film, this movie reconstructs the story of Albe (1913-1974) using archive material, but above all with the voice of his wife Lica (1914-2008) and some of his artist friends such as Arnaldo Pomodoro, Francesco Leonetti and Carlo Forcolini. They describe the Partisan resistance, political militancy, the passion for graphic arts and the cultural and civil commitment of this leading figure in Italian design and culture during the postwar years.

The film ranges from the work on the magazine Il Politecnico by Elio Vittorini to the Triennales, where he was responsible for the graphic design; the art direction of Rinascente from 1950 to 1954; the Compasso d’Oro symbol; projects for Olivetti and Coop, for whom he designed the logo in 1962; and his work with Domus. His message remains as relevant as ever, as the directors explain: “To talk about Steiner is to talk about the responsibility of those who make communication and production through graphics or design; it means talking about good working practice, sustainability, functionality, art and working passion.” E.S.
