A new book tells the story of
Italian design with a series of
profiles of its protagonists, portrayed
by the words of Stefano
Casciani and by the photographs
of Tom Sandberg.
Three generations of industrialists,
operators and
designers, most of whom
are direct acquaintances of
Casciani and so described with
fresh psychological depth,
reveal the greatness and diffi
culties of a typically Italian
phenomenon: a cultural and
manufacturing system derived
from a mostly family-based
economy and founded on deep
personal relationships. The
story, with pioneering beginnings,
includes an analysis
of the changes that have
taken place over recent decades,
such as the contamination
with the star-system,
a marketplace increasingly
thirsty for new products,
and fi nally the entry of some
of the most important manufacturers
of Italian design
into major international fi nancial
groups. With a preface
by Massimiliano Fuksas,
the volume is published by
5Continents. The book will be
presented in Milan on Monday
April 14 at the Artra Gallery,
which will be showing an exhibition
of Tom Sandberg’s
portraits until April 21. S. M.
