United for utopia

“Wouldn’t it be nice... – 10 Utopias in Art and Design” is the title of an exhibition running until May 25 at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zürich. The subject is not a new one: exploring the blurred confine between art and design.

“Wouldn’t it be nice... – 10 Utopias in Art and Design” is the title of an exhibition running until May 25 at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zürich. The subject is not a new one: exploring the blurred confine between art and design. But it is treated in a highly up-to-date way with original works created for the exhibition by ten artists and designers, some more famous than others, whose work crosses over the two disciplines.

The starting point for some is the design of an everyday object (Jurgen Bey, Martí Guixé), and the point of arrival is the representation of a social, ethical or political consideration. For others it is the work of art that creates the design strategies or uses the everyday object as a language to transmit a critical notion regarding social phenomena (Alicia Framis, Martino Gamper, Tobias Rehberger). The two paths often cross and today this occurs in a much more fluid way, definitively breaking down the barriers between the categories. Silvia Monaco
